Coast to Coast 2025
Catálogo / Catalogue
The grantee artists Beata Daria Kubecka, Rina Neimi, and Mari Sagrusten, selected in partnership with the art school DTK Kunstfagskolen i Bærum (Norway), participated in the project titled “Coast to Coast”, which took place over 25 days, from April 3 to 27, 2025, as part of their artistic residency at RAMA – Residências Artísticas de Maceira e Alfeiria. The project was carried out within the framework of Culture Moves Europe, funded by the European Union and implemented by the Goethe-Institut.
The project also welcomed artist Emilia Pennanen, based in Helsinki, Finland, who was likewise a grantee of the Culture Moves Europe initiative. She joined with an independent research project focused on the cliffs along Portugal’s western coastline.

The artists were challenged to relate their artistic practices to their lived experiences along the coasts of Norway, Finland (where they reside), and Portugal’s West region, where RAMA is located. They sought points of contact and contrast between the nature, culture, and spirituality of each coastal territory — the North Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. The project also focused on how the artists’ bodies and perceptions responded to displacement across these distinct environmental and cultural contexts.

Testemunho das artistas / Artists’ testimonies
Beata Daria Kubecka
Culture Moves Europe scholarship holder. My words are in the objects I'm making. That's my speech. That's my language. A defense against disappearance. The thoughts and images grow at a slow pace and carry memories, carry imprints of my body. They will all return to earth, just like me. Just like the forms of my creation. Beata Daria, daughter of Bożena, granddaughter of Jadwiga
Mari Sagrusten
Culture Moves Europe scholarship holder. My works are full of symbolism and carry elements of dreams, rituals and mythology. This interest stems from an attraction to the unreal and the unbridled, creating awe and curiosity. The characters and stories have their own universe, moulded by my experiences. As an intuitive artist, I try to describe the world around me - not by looking at its appearance, but by bringing the sensations it transmits to me, through an adventurous and hopeful expression, contrasting the joys and horrors of the world as if observing it through the eyes of a child.
Rina Neimi
Culture Moves Europe grant holder. My paintings have a figurative language. I work with watercolour and black ink on earth-toned backgrounds to emphasise a moody atmosphere. The recurring themes in my work are references to art history and religion, with symbolism chosen intuitively for each piece. I depict humanoid creatures in conflict with each other or in close proximity. Vulnerability is represented in naked and intimidated figures, in compositions that approach the theatrical.
Emilia Pennanen
Rosa Rocha project explores the myth of the Iberian water goddess Nabia in the context of landscape photography. I will link the research into the myth to the contemporary photographic medium, where I challenge the limitations of the two-dimensional surface of traditional landscape photography, which often distances the viewer from nature. My aim is to find a new way of observing ancient and ever-changing landscapes, collaborating with the natural elements of the place, such as the soil, flora, shells, ancient myths and the sun. My work process includes research and development of ecological photographic developers and earth pigments, writing, photography and performance.
